Wonder Woman (1974)

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

This is the first appearance of Wonder Woman in live action TV, with Cathy Lee Crosby as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, who leaves her matriarchal island paradise to fight an international spy ring. It's a low-budget pilot for a TV series that was never made, with a scene with a snake used as a deadly weapon that is worth watching. It is definitely one of the dumbest snake scenes I've ever seen.

A bad guy named George (Andrew Prine) calls Diana Prince (aka Wonder Woman, played by Cathy Lee Crosby) on her hotel room phone. She sits on the couch to take the call. He invites her to lunch to offer to make a deal with her. (Previously we saw two men enter her room and hide a black metal box under the couch.) As George and Diana make arrangements to meet, he pulls out a black remote control and uses it to open a sliding door on the hidden box. A snake crawls out of the box onto the carpet. She hangs up the phone, then feels the snake wrapping itself around her ankle. Without flinching, she picks up the phone and calls room service asking for a container of milk and a saucer and asking that the waiter take his shoes off in the hall, then let himself into the room. The waiter comes inside with the milk, sees the snake and freezes. She tells him to pour the milk into the saucer then slide it as close to her as he can. Shaking with fear, he puts the saucer full of milk on the floor and the snake quickly unwraps itself from her leg and crawls over to the milk. She gets up and walks over to the waiter, looking down at the snake to make sure it won't attack her again. The waiter asks her :"How can you stand up after that?" and she replies: "It would have been a lot tougher if the snake had bitten me."

Then we see George and Diana at a restaurant. He offers her millions of dollars to stay out of his business which she refuses, then he threatens to kill her if he sees her again. (He tried to kidnap her previously in France, but she beat him up and escaped.) She hands him a box tied up with a red ribbon and tells him "Do enjoy your present," then leaves. When he opens the box we see the snake curled up inside it, apparently dead

I can't tell what kind of snake was used, but it is similar to one of the eastern rat snakes. I can tell you that it is one of the most unrealistic snake scenes I've ever seen. The idea that a snake will wrap itself around a woman's ankle, is laughable enough, but why on earth would they think that a snake would race over to a saucer of milk? Snakes don't drink milk! Not even Milk Snakes! As a snake-used-as-a-weapon scene, it's average at best, but I do like the idea of using a remote control to open a hidden box holding a deadly snake. That's a step above having a person put a snake in the room. However, as I've said many times, the idea of simply putting a venomous snake in a room with someone and expecting it to kill the person is crazy, even though it has been used many times in movies. Most snakes would simply turn around and crawl some place dark.

You can read a synopsis of the whole movie at The Silver Scream. You can also watch the whole movie there, or just the snake sequence which begins at about 29 minutes into the movie.
