The People That Time Forgot (1977)

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

This is a fantasy adventure sequel to The Land That Time Forgot, based on an Edgar Rice Burroughs book. In that movie some shipwrecked sailors overtake a World War One German U-Boat but are then tricked into sailing in the wrong direction and they end up at the unknown island land of Caprona, which is inhabited by dinosaurs and neanderthals. (This was before Google Earth, when there could be gigantic islands in the ocean that nobody knows about.) Bowen Tyler (Doug McClure), who is stranded on the island, throws a message into the ocean which somehow drifts all the way to Europe and is found only a couple of years later.

An old friend of Tyler's, Ben McBride (Patrick Wayne) sails out on a military ship to rescue him. McBride and three others, including Charly (Sarah Douglas) a photographer, and Norfolk (Thorley Walters) a scientist, fly a float plane onto the island. They fight off dinosaurs and neanderthals in their search for Tyler. They are joined by Ajor (Dana Gillespie) a sexy cave woman in a skimpy outfit who was a friend of Tyler before he was captured by the same tribe of horse-riding masked warriors who soon capture them. The warriors take them to their leader, Sabbala (Milton Reid).

Sabbala's people live in a city of skull-shaped buildings on top of a mountain, and he hangs out in a large cave. Saballa's interior decorator is fond of snakes and skulls, so the cave is full of snake lamp holders, snake overhead lamp decorations, snake tapestries, and skulls imbedded in the cave walls. Above the throne is a giant skull with a large Burmese Python crawling on it. We see the python on the skull in the background of most of the scenes in the cave. Someone must have had to keep putting it back on the skull since the scenes were probably shot over many hours, or maybe even days. But we also see several close-ups of it. They really want us to notice the snake, almost as much as they want us to notice Dana Gillespie's low-cut outfit. Saballa sends the men to jail and has the women dressed and prepared to be sacrificed to become brides of the volcano god. But the men find Tyler in the jail, escape, and go back to the cave to save the women.

So they have proof of what they have seen on Caprona, Norfolk goes back into the cave to retrieve Charly's camera full of pictures of dinosaurs and his notebook, which are stored beneath the giant skull with the python, which is now hanging down from the skull. He is startled by the snake at first, but he's a scientist, he realizes that the snake is not a threat, and uses his staff to push it aside so he can walk past it.

After they leave Skulltown, the group goes into a cave where they are threatened by several giant snakes jumping out of holes in the cave walls. One of the giant snakes appears to be as mesmerized by Dana Gillespie's giant cleavage as most of the online commenters are.

The python is only used as part of the scenery to creep us out and to provide one brief scare with Norfolk. The action is intercut several times with close-ups of the snake, probably just to to get their money's worth from the snake rental. The most interesting thing about the snake is that it doesn't do anything. Usually when we see a big snake in a movie, it is involved in some kind of action. I was expecting it to go off, especially when Norfolk encountered it up close, but no such luck.
