This is a supernatural horror movie about three witches who were burned 300 years ago in the small New England town of Devonsville. When three single liberated women move to the town in the present day, some closed-minded and superstitious men of the town persecute them as their ancestors did. There is a nice scene of a man's head melting after a witch shoots laser beams from her eyes at him. There's also a brief scene of a snake put in a woman's bed.
Jenny Scanlon (Suzanna Love, who also co-wrote the script) is a new schoolteacher in town who teaches her students that god is considered to be a woman in some religions. This creates an uproar in the conservative Christian town and leads to someone putting a snake in her bed to either kill her or scare her into leaving town. The intent is not entirely clear and we don't know who is responsible. We see her lifting the covers to her bed, seeing a snake, and screaming, then the camera cuts to another scene and we don't see or hear anything more about the snake assault.
The snake is a gophersnake, a harmless species that we are supposed to think is venomous.
