Mountaintop Motel Massacre (1983)

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

This is a slasher horror movie about Evelyn, a mentally-unstable woman recently released from a mental hospital who accidentally killed her young daughter, who was a naturalist with a collection of snakes and other critters, then later kills most of the guests staying at the motel she runs. There is a large crawl space below the rooms and hidden trap doors into the bathrooms that Evelyn uses to sneak into the rooms. She kills most of them with a gardening sickle, first tormenting some of them by putting some of her daughter's rodents and cockroaches in their rooms. She also uses a venomous snake in one room in yet another lame movie example a snake used as a weapon by simply letting it go in a room and hoping it will find and bite someone instead of just hiding and doing nothing, which is exactly what any normal snake would do.

We see Evelyn in her daughter's room which is full of dolls and terrariums and jars of critters. Evelyn is holding a small snake in her hand, probably one of her daughter's pets. Later, when the Sheriff is called to investigate a snakebite, we see him in the room using a crowbar to pick up another snake that is lying on a bed.

Then we see Evelyn pulling a large snake out of a terrarium, which must have been one of her daughter's pets. She then puts it in a burlap bag. After some honeymooners check in, she puts the bag in their room where we see the snake crawling on the floor away from the bag. When she gives the groom the key, Evelyn tells him she has a surprise for his little wife. The man gets undressed and gets in bed, anxious to get busy on his wedding night, but his wife goes into the bathroom first. As he lies in bed waiting, we see shots of the snake crawling on his nightstand with his back to it. When he lays back on the bed the snake strikes and bites him on the cheek. He jumps back in pain then leans over and throws a shirt over the snake then whacks it to death with one of his boots. At first we see two red fang marks on his cheek, and later he has a huge welt where he was bitten. But before he can die of snakebite, the old woman finishes him off along with his wife.

The snake Evelyn is holding in her hand is a juvenile Mud Snake. I can't see the snake the Sheriff picks up from the bed well enough to know what it is but it's another juvenile snake, maybe a rat snake or a corn snake. We see a live venomous Cottonmouth on a nightstand, but that was certainly shot with no actors nearby. The snake we see crawling on the nightstand next to the husband is probably a harmless water snake. The snake Evelyn pulls out of the terrarium is a fake prop snake.
