Ella Enchanted (2004)

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

This is a version of the Cinderella story that takes place in a medieval fairy tale world full of magic fairies, elves, giants, ogres, and talking snakes.

A fairy put a spell on the main character Ella (Anne Hathaway) when she was an infant that makes her do whatever anyone tells her to do. (That could have gone in a different but interesting direction if it was aimed at a more adult audience, but no such luck.) This is a feel-good romantic comedy with music and dancing and happy endings and Anne Hathaway lighting up the screen whenever we see her. If you usually avoid movies like that, as I do, then you might be pleased to learn that one of the comic characters is an evil talking snake. He's only an animated snake in a live action film, but he's a prominent character who appears throughout the film.

The snake's name is Heston (Steve Coogan's voice) and he is an advisor and companion to Edgar (Cary Elwes) the uncle of Prince Charmont (Hugh Dancy) of the kingdom of Lamia, who was raised by Edgar when his father the king died. We see Heston coiled around Edgar's staff and throne, geting drunk in a bar, hiding in a horse's saddlebag to spy on Char, and making threats to humans. He's the bad cop to Uncle Edgar's nice guy, but even though Edgar seems nice to Char, he has ulterior motives, which we know from his conversations with Heston. The kingdom of Lamia also has symbols of snakes on it's soldiers' shields and banners and there are large gold snake sculptures in the throne room of the palace.

Like most evil characters in fairly tales, Heston doesn't fare well in the end. During the climactic fight scene in the palace, he threatens Ella, opening his mouth and extending his fangs (with the sound effect we always hear when a sword is drawn in a movie) ready to bite her, but before he can she steps on him and then kicks him across the room. We last see Heston when a group of girls in Char's fan club attack him because they think he was trying to kill Char.
