This is a surprisingly good action-fantasy-comedy that's loosely based on a game I have never played which you don't need to know anything about to enjoy. It's about Edgin (Chris Pine) a sort of policeman whose wife is killed by criminals he arrested, causing him to resign and become a thief to support his daughter. He gets together with a group of misfit criminals and magicians to steal a magic stone that can bring his wife back to life, but the stone and his daughter are taken from him by the evil Red Wizard Sofina (Daisy Head) and a con artist (Hugh Grant). After escaping from prison he and his barbarian friend Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) gather up two more companions, a magician named Simon (Justice Smith) and a shape-shifting female Druid with horns, big ears and a tail named Doric (Sophia Lillis.) Doric's shapeshifting can turn herself into many creatures. We first see her as a large white Owl Bear, fighting the captors of one of her companions. We also see her take the shape of a fly, a mouse, and a deer, and a snake.
After traveling through dungeons and fighting off dragons the four adventurers sneak into the fortress controlled by Sofina where they are forced to participate in a game taking place in a stadium. The game participants have to get through a giant maze as giant black panther creatures are trying to kill and eat them.
After they make their way out of the maze with a panther in close pursuit, Doric convinces the others to jump into a cube of goo that is designed to kill people in a few minutes. They are skeptical but she convinces them that she will pull them out before they die.
Just before the panther catches them they all jump into the cube and Doric holds her finger through the edge of the goo to make a hole in it. Then she turns herself into a snake so she can crawl out the hole. Then she returns to her human form and pulls out one of the others then the two of them pull out the other two, and everybody survives.
This leaves me with questions like how can the snake crawl through the goo while everybody else is paralyzed in it? but it's probably best not to think too literally about a fantasy movie with a character who can turn herself into a snake. The snake is not real, it's a computer animation.
