This is the first sequel to Despicable Me (2010) starring Steve Carell as Gru, a criminal mastermind who goes soft after kidnapping three orphan girls. Gru, his mad scientist, his army of little yellow minions, and the three girls all live in the suburbs in this movie, and instead of plotting to take over the world, Gru runs a factory that makes jam. After a secret Arctic laboratory is stolen, Gru is approached by the Anti-Villain League to help them find the culprit. Gru teams up with nut job agent Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig) to search a shopping mall where the villain is located. They meet a man named Eduardo Perez who runs a Mexican restaurant in the mall. Gru thinks he might be a villain named El Macho who supposedly died 20 years earlier.
Gru tells Lucy El Macho was ruthless, dangerous, and very macho, as we see a flashback of him in a bar pouring a drink from a bottle labeled Scorpion's Revenge. Then he grabs a rattlesnake and squirts its venom into the glass as a skull appears in the mist above the glass. He throws the entire glass into his mouth, uses the snake's fangs like a stapler to nail his money to the bar, then punches a huge hole in the wall and walks outside. (That's how a real man goes out drinking!) Gru then tells Lucy: "He died in the most macho way possible. Riding a shark with 250 pounds of dynamite strapped to his chest into the mouth of an active volcano."
