This is a short comic silent film made by the famous French director Abel Gance. The plot is simple: a man named Max (Max Linder) accepts a bet that he can't stay in a haunted castle for an hour without calling for help.
In the castle Max sees lots of strange things - a servant who loses head then retrieves it, a tiger behind a door, a giant skeleton man, a group of ghosts in white sheets, moving statues, large swords dropping from the ceiling, pistols popping out of walls that shoot his cigarette when he tries to light it, a chair that grabs him when he sits in it, a hooded executioner who tries to chop his head off, lions, crocodiles, and snakes. There are three short episodes with snakes.
Max sits down at a desk next to a buzzer he can push to call for help and lights a cigarette, but a hand holding a gun emerges from the wall and shoots the cigarette. He tries to light another cigarette but the same thing happens. As he lifts his hand up contemplating pushing the panic buzzer the desk drawer opens and snakes crawl out into his sleeve and up his jacket. At first he makes faces that show he's enjoying the sensation, but then he starts to freak out. He grabs one snake and pulls it out of his jacket then throws it away. Then he grabs the other snake and throws it away.
After Max escapes the executioner's axe, he walks up to a statue above some stairs with large snakes crawling on them. The head of the statue is also covered with snakes. Max just walks down the stairs past the snakes.
Max returns to the desk with the panic buzzer and starts to light a cigar. We see a large snake crawling from behind the chair to his back. Max feels a strange sensation and stands up to see the snake on his chair. He remembers that there is a bottle of poison on the desk that he drank from earlier, so he pours some poison in a glass and holds it up to the shake's head, but the snake isn't thirsty.
The first snakes we see crawling out of the desk drawer are small and unidentifiable. The first snake he pulls out of his jacket has a banded pattern, but I think it's a fake snake. The snakes crawling on the stairs and from the back of his chair are pythons. I don't know what kind of small snakes are crawling on the head of the statue.
