The Hollywood Sign was originally a billboard of 50-foot-tall white letters illuminated by a searchlight that was erected in 1923 on Mt. Lee in the Santa Monica Mountains. It was intended to be a temporary advertisement for the Hollywoodland real estate development but it lasted for more than two decades as it fell into disrepair, a victim of high winds and vandalism. In 1949 the sign was restored and shortened, with the LAND letters removed. In 1978 it was completely rebuilt with 45-foot-high metal letters to become a Historic Cultural Monument and an enduring symbol of Los Angeles and the entertainment industry (as well as an enormous canvas for pranksters who have unofficially altered it several times, including to HOLLYWeeD and HOLLYBOOB.)
