These are songs from the main list of songs about California that mention the city of Malibu, California (aka "The 'Bu"). A few songs only mention a place in Malbu such as Zuma Beach. There is also Malibu, a rum-based coconut flavored liqueur, and a mid-sized family car named the Chevy Malibu, which sometimes get mentioned in songs. I don't plan to list those here, but I will list songs with references to "Malibu Barbie" if they're about the California beach girl stereotype named after the doll.
Malibu is famous as a beautiful place with lots of beaches with good surfing and a lot of these songs are about surfing there, but California has a lot of beautiful beach towns and good surfing spots that are not celebrated in lots of songs as Malibu is. That is probably because Malibu is so close to Hollywood and the hills where a lot of entertaiment industry people live and play, including musicians and songwriters such as Miley Cyrus, who released her song about the city a year and a half before her house there burned down in the devastating 2018 wildfire.
Since the 1920s when land was first sold to create the Malibu Movie Colony, Malibu has been acclaimed as a seaside paradise inhabited by wealthy successful people and the priciest homes in the state. Unfortunately, that ritzy image often leads to Malibu being name-dropped in a song as part of the fixation with luxury status symbols and bragging about conspicuous consumption that plagues a lot of popular music these days. Some of them are surely paid product placements like those we see in movies, but probably not the Malibu mentions. It's doubtful that anyone needs to pay to promote the place. |
