Eurycea guttolineata was formerly treated as a subspecies of Eurycea longicauda. The Salamanders shown above were found in an area in Northern Virgina where the ranges of Eurycea guttolineata and Eurycea longicauda longicauda come into contact. I was told by good authority that the two species hybridize at the location, though I have not yet found any published information about this to cite. In "Amphibians & Reptiles of the Carolinas and Virginia" by Jeffrey C. Beane et al, 2010, the authors write "Populations in Northern Virginia may resemble hybrids with characteristics of both species, but genetic analysis in other parts of the range on similar populations suggests that these are variants of the Three-lined Salamander." |
