Turtles in Movies   The Red Turtle (2016)   Spoiler Alert ! Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.   The great Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli produced this Oscar-nominated French/Belgian animated film. Even though 5 actors are credited with character voices, there's not a single word spoken in the movie, unless you consider shouting "hey!" a word. The story is told only through the images and sounds. The movie is not really about turtles, but we do see lots of sea turtles in it from babies on the beach to adults in the water. A shipwrecked man is stranded on a lush but deserted island. He builds a raft to try to leave the island. When he gets out to sea the raft is smashed by a large red sea turtle, forcing him to swim back to the island. He keeps trying to build better rafts but the red turtle keeps destroying them. When the man finds the red turtle on the beach, he kills it, flipping it over onto its back to die. After a while, the turtle's shell cracks and we see a human woman with long red hair inside the shell. She and the man get together, have a son, and raise him on the island. He learns to swim with the sea turtles. When he's grown he leaves the island, swimming away with the turtles. The man and woman grow old. The man dies. The woman turns back into a turtle again and crawls back into the ocean.
