This is based on the same novel that the 1971 movie The Beguiled was made from. They both have essentially the same plot, but this one is made in a modern more realistic style, with no artificial lighting. It was also directed by a woman, Sofia Coppola, who puts the focus more on the women and girls and their status in society during the Civil War era, with an excellent cast of actors.

In the beginning, we see Amy, a young girl in Virginia, out collecting mushrooms in the woods. She discovers a wounded Union soldier, Corporal McBurney (Colin Farrell) and brings him back to her home, a large mansion that serves as Miss Martha Farnsworth's Seminary for Young Ladies. We later see her alone in her room affectionately feeding a pet turtle named Henry.

Keeping a handsome enemy soldier as the only man in the house causes a great deal of concern and sexual tension among the girls and women, and McBurney takes advantage of it, beguiling them all. Eventually, when his wounds heal, one of the older women he has been flirting with named Edwina, finds him in bed with a younger woman. He runs out to talk to Edwina but she pushes him down the stairs and his leg is shattered beyond repair. The women are forced to amputate his leg to save his life, but when he finds out what they did he becomes enraged. He gets drunk, picks up their pistol, and threatens them when they are in the kitchen. Amy is also in the kitchen with her turtle Henry. She asks McBurney not to frighten Henry, so he picks up the turtle and throws it against a cabinet, killing it. In this movie we don't actually see the turtle hit something and bounce and we don't see its bloody carcass in Amys hands as we do in the 1971 version.

The women decide they need to kill McBurney. Amy is so distraught after McBurney killed her turtle that when she is asked to pick poisonous mushrooms to feed him at dinner, she doesn't hesitate.
