I haven't seen many, but this is one of the better Elvis Presley movies I've seen, probably because it was directed by the great Michael Curtiz in a noirish black-and-white. (He also directed the classic Casablanca.) Elvis plays a New Orleans street punk who fails to graduate from high school, so he takes a job in a nightclub called The King Creole, where he attracts the attention of criminals and becomes a big star. It's unintentionally hilarious how he just jumps on stage and sings with the band that he's never rehearsed with before, but that's typical for an Elvis movie. And, as usual, he sings several songs and gets involved with women, including a young shop girl, played by Dolores Hart (who got fed up with Hollywood and became a Nun) and the boss gangster's sleazy hot girlfriend, played by Carolyn Jones, who I always think of as Morticia from the Adam's Family TV show.

During the opening shots of New Orleans, we see three street vendors on empty streets, singing out the names of what they're selling. One woman has baskets full of small turtles for sale "for you ladies." Another man is selling berries, and another sells gumbo. I myself have never eaten a turtle, but they were once a large part of the diet of Americans and are still favored in China, where many American turtles are still exported today, causing a decline in wild turtles in America.
