This is a crime drama about Luke, a prisoner in a Southern chain gang who refuses to respect authority. He keeps escaping and being captured. Paul Newman received an Oscar nomination for his role in this, but George Kennedy won an Oscar for his role as another convict.
In the turtle scene, Luke is with a road gang cutting weeds along a road when the head guard shoots a snapping turtle in a river with a rifle. He sends Luke to fetch it to cut it up for lunch. Luke uses a stick to pull it out by it's jaws. He says "Hey hey here he is boss, deader than hell but won't let go. Luke takes it to the truck, throws it in, then takes the opportunity to drive away in the truck to try to escape. |
