Tom and Thomas are twins separated at birth. Tom lives in an institute for boys while Thomas has an adopted father. The boys have an empathic connection - they feel things that happen to the other twin, and see him in dreams, but for their first nine years they have never met in person. Thomas' father thinks he has an imaginary friend named Tom. Just before his 9th birthday, Tom escapes from the institute then shoplifts a coat. For his 9th birthday, Thomas convinces his father to buy him a coat which is the same kind that Tom stole. Then Thomas and his father go into a Space Museum where they separate and agree to meet at a moon landing simulator. Thomas waits by the simulator where (in a nice bit of foreshadowing) he hears a woman's voice on the intercom saying: "Visit our mirror room and experience the miracles that happen within the reflections. Come in and be part of it." He walks over to the mirror room and goes inside and we hear the same message on the intercom. Thomas sees reflections of himself and then he sees reflections of a boy who looks exactly like him and is wearing the same coat, but with its hoodie unzipped. This confuses him, so Thomas walks around inside the mirrors until he finds the real Tom and reaches out and touches his face. Then a woman's voice on the intercom tells him to come to the information desk where his father is waiting for him, so he leaves before the two boys have a chance to talk. When he sees his father, he tells him that he now knows that Tom is real because he touched him, but his father thinks he's crazy. Later that night at the Space Museum a security guard goes into the mirror room, finds Tom sleeping on the floor and takes him to another room. Meahwhile, Thomas has gone back to the Space Museum and is standing outside a glass door when the guard sees him and thinks he's Tom who got away. He chases Thomas which gives Tom a chance to leave the museum. The two boys then meet and run off together. The mirror room scenes are at approximately 34:50 and 39:30 min.
