After Dark's Pandemonium Carnival suddenly appears overnight, Will and Jim, two 12-year-old boys, sneak around and discover that it's an evil fair with a magic carousel that can make people older or younger, and a mirror maze that can make wishes come true, but at a steep cost. Mr. Dark, the carnival's leader (Jonathan Pryce) abducts the boys to keep them from exposing his secrets, but Will's father (Jason Robards) is determined to stop him. He goes into the mirror maze where he hears Will (Vidal Peterson) crying out for him, echoed over and over like the many mirror images. Then he hears Mr. Dark's voice saying: "Not dead yet Mr. Halloway? Come looking in my mirrors for another chance? Shall I help you find it? Would you know it if you saw it? Then Mr. Dark shows him reflections of some of the townspeople whose dreams he has fulfilled and whose lives he has ruined, including a lustful barber, a greedy cigar salesman, an envious bartender, and a vain old schoolteacher who wated to be young and beautiful again. He tells Mr. Halloway that he is a failure as a man and a father and that his son does not love him. But then we hear Will calling out, saying that he loves his father. Mr. Halloway punches a mirror, breaking it and frees Will.
