In a future dystopian Chicago, society is divided into six social groups - five factions plus the outcasts who belong to no faction. Beatrice is a young woman born into the Abnegation faction, whose members prize selflessness and restrain from looking into mirrors because they reject vanity. At age 16 she takes a placement test to find out which of the five factions she belongs in. She drinks some liquid then finds herself in a simulation in a large space full of mirrors with thousands of reflections of herself.
