At the end of the movie we see a reporter who has been trying and failing to find out the meaning of "rosebud," Kane's last word before he died. He interviews the man in charge of Kane's estate who tells him he heard the word one other time, after Kane's wife left him. We see a flashback of Kane smashing up his wife's bedroom then finding a snow globe of a cabin in the snow and saying the word "rosebud." Then Kane puts the glass ball in his pocket and walks away slowly though his enormous mansion full of servants into a hall with large mirrors in ornate frames on each wall that make multiple reflections of him. After he walks past the infinite mirror and out of the frame, the camera lingers on the empty mirror, then zooms in slowly as it fades out and cuts back to the interview.
