The last scene in this Best Picture Oscar-winner shows Eve superfan and wannabe actress Phoebe (Barbara Bates) alone in Eve's apartment. She puts on an elegant cloak that Eve wore to an awards ceremony that night and holds the award Eve won. She stands in front of floor-length 3-way mirrors that reflect her image into infinity, bowing and pretending to accept the award, foreshadowing that the scheming Phoebe will displace Eve just as devious Eve displaced Margo. (Sadly, Barbara Bates never actually won such a prestigious award and killed herself less than 20 years later.) |
