As Peter searches for the lizard monster he encounters normal lizards crawling around the city, including many of them in the sewer tunnels where he searches for the monster.

When the giant lizard breaks into Peter's high school, they fight, and in one scene we see peter grab the lizard's tail, which breaks off, then immediately grows back.
All of the lizards we see are computer-generated.
In the real world, lizards re-generate their tails, not their limbs. Salamanders can re-generate their limbs, but I suppose salamanders are not threatening enough to be the villain in a comic book superhero movie.
