This is a romantic comedy that was very successful at the box office, starring Ben Stiller as Reuben Feffer, an inhibited life insurance dweeb and newlywed on his honeymoon on the island of St. Barts. He catches his wife Lisa (Debra Messing) having sex with a scuba instructor and she decides to stay there, so he heads back home to New York City where he encounters his old school classmate Polly (Jennifer Aniston) and they start dating.
On the island, before they split up, Reuben carries Lisa over the threshold of their hotel room when a lizard falls from the ceiling fan onto her waist. This scares them so much that he drops her on the floor. We don't see what becomes of the chameleon, but somehow the fall resulted in a bruise on Lisa's inner thigh, which we see later when they're on the beach where Reuben makes a joke about the lizard being a Komodo Dragon.
Unless I missed something, the lizard scenes don't seem to have much to do with the rest of the plot. They are probably included just to be funny, and chameleons are very funny in appearance, but it's also possible that being dropped by her new husband put Lisa in the mood to find another man.
We see a close-up of a chameleon of unknown species on the blade of a ceiling fan, but the falling lizard was probably a prop. Chameleons are Old World lizards that do are not naturally found on St. Barts, but they have been introduced to other areas, such as Florida, Hawaii, and California, so it's not impossible that they could be in the West Indies, also. |
