This is a horror thriller with lots of sex and violence set in 1979 about some strip club employees and a film crew who all drive to a rented farmhouse in rural Texas where they plan to make a pornogrphic movie to capitalize on the new home video market. They don't tell their strange old hosts what they're doing, and when the old ones find out, the blood starts flowing, including a brutal alligator attack.

Maxine (Mia Goth) is one of the actresses in the porno. When the others start shooting a sex scene, she goes outside where she finds a lake. She takes off her clothing and dives into the water. She floats around for a while then swims back to the dock unaware that she is being followed by a large alligator. We see some very high overhead shots of the gator slowly gaining on her as the tension mounts because we don't know if it's going to grab her. Finally she climbs out onto the dock just before the alligator catches up to her. She never knew that it was there, but we do, and the sequence sets us up for more appearances of the gator.

Later, one of the actresses (Brittany Snow) goes to the same dock on the lake where the old woman Pearl (Mia Goth in "old woman" makeup) pushes her into the water where the alligator is conveniently waiting and hungry. Pearl and her husband Howard watch it tear the actress to pieces. It's gory, but it's not the bloodiest mess we see in this gory movie.
CinemaSins describes the scene as "...not only an interesting representation of the danger to Maxine's life, of which she is blissfully unaware, but it also serves to establish the danger in and around this body of water which will come into play for multiple characters. It's a quick injection of suspense that deserves some recognition."
They didn't use a real alligator, but it's close enough for a low budget horror movie, at least until the scene where it kills Bobby-Lynne. Then it's pretty obviously a fake gator.
The movie was produced by the always interesting independent production company A24, which has announced that "X" is the first of a trilogy of movies which will be followed by "Pearl" and "MaXXXine."In "Pearl" which takes place 61 years earlier than "X" we see a large alligator that Pearl has named Theda eating a goose and a few humans.
