This is a family adventure movie about a magical board game that brings real dangers to the players. When two orphaned siblings, Judy and Peter Shepherd (Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce), play the game, they release Alan Parrish (Robin Williams), who has been trapped in the game for 26 years. He helps them overcome the threats brought on by the game. Some of these threats we see in the movie are swarming bats, rampaging monkeys, strangling vines, plants that shoot poison darts, giant spiders, a stampede of wild rhinoceroses, an earthquake, quicksand, and the torrential rain from a monsoon that floods a house.
Judy, Peter, Alan, and his old girlfriend Sarah (Bonnie Hunt) run upstairs to save themselves from the monsoon flood but it has flooded there, too. As they are swimming, they spot a crocodile swimming towards them. It lunges for Sarah but she closes its mouth with her feet. Then Alan dives into the water and wrestles it. Sarah tries to thank Alan for saving her from the alligator, but he corrects her, saying that it was a crocodile. That ruins what she was hoping to make into a romantic moment.
Apparently Alan killed the crocodile, though later we see another crocodile (which could be the same one) floating in the middle of a flooded street between a police officer (David Alan Grier) and Judy and Peter's mother Nora (Bebe Neuwirth) who are floating down the street on doors from the damaged house.
Most of the visual effects are computer-generated imagery, but the crocodile is a practical effect made by putting a man inside a crocodile suit. Williams told a story about hitting the croc hard with his elbow then hearing a voice inside protest that he hit too hard. |
