Alligators and Crocodiles in Movies

Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (2001)

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

This is the third Crocodile Dundee movie. Typical of them, most of the crocodiles we see are practical effects with stunt prop crocodiles, but we do see a few scenes of real crocodiles under the opening credits just to make us thing they're real. We also see with other wildlife under the credits, including a monitor lizard and a frilled dragon. There's also a scene with a giant artificial anaconda on a movie theme ride, and a scene with a monitor lizard on a tree.

The movie starts out in the Australian outback where we see Mick Dundee (Paul Hogan) his girlfriend Sue Charleton (Linda Kozlowski) and their son Mikey Dundee (Serge Negus). In a funny scene, Dundee gets a call to catch a rogue crocodile. We see him in a boat on a lake baiting a noose with a large piece of meat, but instead of taking the bait, the crocodile smashes the boat, forcing Dundee to climb up on a large tree branch. His crocodile hunting mate Jacko (Alec Wilson) paddles up in another boat but the crocodile smashes it too, leaving them both up on the branch as a group of tourists walks up to the shore gawking at the two men up a tree. Dundee worries that their reputations as the best crocodile hunters have been ruined. Then the tree branch breaks, dropping them in the water, and they swim frantically to the shore, barely escaping the crocodile.

At the end of the movie, Mick and Sue get married outdoors in Australia. Mick tells everyone that his crocodile hunting days are over. Sue throws the bouquet a little too far and it heads towards a pond. Everyone is shocked to see a crocodile jump out of the water to catch it, and we see that Dundee has another crocodile to catch.

After picking Mikey up from school, Mick takes him for a walk in a forest where they see some goanna poo on the ground. As a learning exercise, Mick asks Mikey to identify it then find the lizard. They discover the big lizard up on a tree branch. Mikey picks up a rock to throw at the lizard. Before he can throw it, Mick asks him if he's hungry and wants to eat the lizard. When Mikey tells him no, Mick tells him to drop the rock, because he shouldn't harm an animal unless he's going to eat it. This is not just a teaching moment, because in Australia some people do eat goannas.

They the three of them travel to Los Angeles where we see all of the usual southern California clichés and locations. Mick immediately gets in trouble, causing a traffic jam and a bomb scare, then he gets a job as a movie extra where he uncovers an art smuggling operation.

Snake Scene

Mick takes Mikey to a movie theme park in Hollywood. Mikey asks him if he has his big knife and Mick tells him all he has is his pocket knife. They take a tram on the African Jungle ride where the guide tells the riders to look out for a giant anaconda. When the giant animatronic snake springs out at the tram riders, Dundee's reflexes kick in and he stabs the snake through the head with the biggest folding knife I've ever seen. We see smoke and sparks coming out of the ruined snake. The guide is in awe of Mick's skill and the size of his knife, but Mick and Mikey get away as quickly as they can as the snake smokes in the background.
