This a romantic comedy disguised as an adventure movie. The romance is between two very opposite types - he was raised by aborigines in the outback and has never been to a city and she is a New York City journalist. The first half takes place in his world, the outback, and the second half takes place in New York City. This movie was the second biggest box office hit of 1986, but when I watched it more than 30 years later, it was a mystery to me why it was so popular. But I knew it would have some snakes and lizards and crocodiles, and I was not disappointed.
Sue travels to northern Australia to interview a man that Australian newspapers reported had his leg bitten off by a crocodile then walked by himself a hundred miles to a doctor. When she gets there she learns it was all exaggerated. Nevertheless, Dundee takes her into the bush to show her the area where it happened.
They spend a night filled with venomous snakes and kangaroo poachers. The next morning Dundee offends her by telling her she wouldn't last five minutes without him - "It's a man's world." She goes off by herself. Dundee secretly follows her and watches her from a distance. This gets creepy when she takes her clothes off to bathe by a lake and fill her canteen. But almost immediately a huge crocodile leaps out of the water and grabs her canteen, which is still wrapped around her neck. She struggles to keep from being dragged into the water. Dundee jumps onto the croc and shoves his giant knife into its head, killing it. She asks if it's dead, and Dundee says: "Well, if it isn't it'll be hell skinning the bastard."
The crocodile we see here was fake, but a good one. I was disappointed that we didn't see more crocodiles in the movie. This was the only one except for a very brief library crocodile shot. |
