Amphibians in Movies

Hanzo the Razor: Sword of Justice (1972) [Goyokiba]

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

This is an artsy Japanese Samurai sexploitation film, the first in a trilogy. It's based on a comic, which explains its twisted humor, and it includes a rare scene with a salamander.

The movie is set in ancient Japan in the days of the Samurai. Hanzo the Razor (Shintarô Katsu) is an officer of the law who fights corruption and crime while committing crimes himself. He's known for his "unorthodox interrogation techniques." What that means is that he rapes women to make them confess, and we're supposed to think the rapes are ultimately OK because the women end up enjoying it, but it would be more accurate to call him Hanzo the rapist.

The salamander shows up after Hanzo rapes a woman to make her tell him where to find her criminal boyfriend. We see them sitting in a hot tub drinking saké as he continues interrogating her. She looks up and is shocked to see a salamander on the bathhouse ceiling. Hanzo splashes water on it to make it fall to the floor. The woman is terrified when it falls to the floor near her. So Hanzo pulls a lever that makes a bunch of sharp pointed blades fall to the floor, skewering the salamander. He tells the woman that his house is full of booby traps and secret caches of weapons because he has a lot of enemies. Then he retracts the swords and we can see that the salamander is stuck on the end of one of the blades as they raise back up to the ceiling.

I don't know what kind of salamander they used in the scene but it's probably a newt. It looks similar to the one used in the Japanese movie House (1977) which is also impaled by a sharp object falling from the ceiling. Some newts can be deadly if eaten, but a newt crawling on the ceiling of a bathhouse is completely harmless. We have seen Hanzo fight off armed men, rape women, and beat his giant penis with a hammer, so we know he's a tough guy. Watching him kill a harmless amphibian seems unnecessary. It was probably just an excuse to show us his home defense system and weapons caches.
