This is a romantic comedy directed by Ang Lee about a master Taiwanese chef and his three marriageable daughters. Every Sunday they share a very elaborate dinner.
As the film opens we see a cooking montage as the chef prepares a huge feast. He brings a live chicken into the kitchen and as the camera follows him we briefly see a pile of about 6 or 7 frogs on a table, among the other raw foods. The frogs begin to crawl away as we lose sight of them. We do not see them used in the preparation of any of the dishes for the feast. They were obviously piled on the table just for the one shot. I don't doubt that a pile of frogs would be ingredients in a Chinese feast (Chinese cuisine can include almost anything - snakes, turtles, frogs, even scorpions) but it's absurd to think that the frogs would be simply dumped alive on a table waiting to be killed and cooked. The shot is obviously done for comic effect. |
