This is a violent and realistic revisionist western. A group of boys during the Civil War travel west hoping to escape poverty and military conscription, but they become desperadoes, running into lot of violence and betrayal.
After they welcome a new boy named Drew (Barry Brown) into their group, we see them sitting together in the woods. The leader Jake (Jeff Bridges) wanders away a few feet into the woods to go to the bathroom where sees a frog on the ground. He secretly picks it up and returns to the group. Then he puts the frog down Drew's shirt, causing a commotion. Drew is shocked and pulls the frog out. Then he runs after one of the other boys named Bob and puts the frog down the front of Bob's pants. Jake tells Bob he'll take care of the frog, then kicks Bob between the legs. Bob says "I think you killed him."
The incident helps the boys to bond during a time when they aren't getting along because they don't trust the new boy Drew. |
